Articles of law By Bhag Singh (PAGE 04)

  1. Protecting a woman's reputation
    01/04/2003  The Star
THE word “defamation” is fairly common and most people know what it means. To defame someone is to adversely affect that person’s reputation.

  2. House buyers unite
    29/04/2003  The Star
ISSUES relating to the purchase of a house from developers are unlikely to completely disappear despite the changes made to the law and the various strategies adopted by the authorities.

  3. Deterring wrongdoing
    27/05/2003  The Star
We live in a society where each individual is extensively dependent on others and has to deal with many other people to fulfil and meet a variety of daily needs, be it goods, services or other personal requirements.

  4. Lodging police reports
    17/06/2003  The Star
ALMOST everyone is familiar with police reports or at least has heard of them. Many readers would have gone to a police station and lodged a police report. There are other occasions when something happens and a person is asked whether he has made a police report or asks himself whether he should do so.

  5. Restraints in contracts
    24/06/2003  The Star
AGREEMENTS and contracts govern almost every facet of our lives. And for practical purposes it may be said that they mean one and the same thing. Technically, however, contracts are agreements that are legally enforceable. If they are unenforceable, they remain merely agreements.

  6. The milieu a must
    01/07/2003  The Star
DEFAMATION is a subject that has been discussed in this column from time to time. Basically, defamation comprises libel and slander. The former is defined as defamation in a permanent form and the latter, traditionally defamation in a transient form.

  7. Chance for gain
    08/07/2003  The Star
MORE people are getting involved in business and becoming directors of companies. There are occasions when a director may find himself purchasing a property which either the company had originally intended to purchase, or coming to know about the property due to his position in the company. The latter being the case, is he permitted to seize the opportunity? Is it an offence or a breach, asks a reader.

  8. Defining an association
    30/09/2003  The Star
The word "association" is commonly used to refer to a variety of concepts. In some cases, the word is used independently, while in other cases, it is used as part of a phrase. Thus a company has been described as an association of people who come together with a common objective to achieve economic gain.

  9. Access to courts
    18/11/2003  The Star
The right of access to courts is a crucial entitlement of an individual whether he/she is a citizen or not. However the eventual relief that a person is entitled to may vary depending on whether a person is a citizen or not. The right of access to the court is not entirely aalways unrestricted. This is because the law may restrict this right by making provisions as to how a person may be restrained from seeking relief in the ordinary courts.

  10. Promises not kept
    3/01/2004  The Star
When low airfare advertisements began to appear in the media, there was at first disbelief. It quickly transformed into excitement, prompting many people to plan to travel by air to the advertised destinations. As many could not obtain seats at the advertised prices, there gradually was some disappointment that eventually translated into a feeling of being aggrieved.
