No late charges for assessment payments
02/08/2008 NST

PETALING JAYA: Residents in Petaling Jaya have never been imposed with late or interest charges when they are late in making assessment payments.

PJ Mayor Mohamd Roslan Sakiman said that has always been the city council's practice. "That is nothing new about that.

"We only charge an amount when we have to send out notices reminding house owners of late payments," said the mayor.

He was asked to comment on a federal court ruling on Wednesday in a landmark case against Klang Municipal Council for imposing a penalty for late payment which was a percentage of the amount owed by a factory owner.

The ruling read that local authorities did not have the legal right to impose penalty charges on late or unpaid assessment rates.

The decision was delivered on July 18 when the court allowed an appeal by General Products Sdn Bhd against the Klang Municipal Council for assessment notices since 1985.
