"e-Tanah" Protects Land Owner Rights - Sothinathan
17/12/2007 Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- An efficient computerised land administration and management system or "e-Tanah" will help protect land owner rights and prevent cheating during the transfer of ownership.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk S. Sothinathan said the system was equipped with security features such as digital signatures on the ownership documents and coded ownership registration documents, besides registering users' identification on every transaction made.

"The ownership title register is also kept in the data base in the form of images with the function `read only', and any tampering will be detected automatically," he said when winding-up the debate on the National Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2007 in the Dewan Rakyat here today.

Sothinathan said as managing the system required ethical personnel with high integrity, the ministry would be monitoring them.

"We assure the public that a security system will be installed but if cheating does occur, we will take legal action against those involved," he said.

The e-Tanah system, introduced at the Penang Land Office as a pilot project, will be expanded nationwide.

The Bill was later approved.
