State Government And SPNB Build Houses For Flood Victims
23/01/2007 Bernama

KOTA TINGGI, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- The Johor state government and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) will build 100 low-cost houses for flood victims whose homes were destroyed in the recent floods.

State Housing Committee Chairman Datuk Baderi Dasuki said the proposal to build the houses would be discussed in the company's management meeting next week.

"Under the proposal, SPNB will build low-cost houses costing below RM40,000 each, but the houses will be sold at RM26,000 each to the flood victims and the state government will pay a subsidy of RM14,000 for each unit," he said.

"We hope the project could be implemented soon, as the site for the houses will be provided by the state government," he told Bernama when met at the Kota Tinggi orphanage here, Tuesday.

According to Baderi, the house buyers would not be required to pay interest on the loans and they would be asked to pay not more than RM100 a month for the houses.

Several flood victims in Kota Tinggi lost their homes which were swept off by strong current. They were mostly from Kampung Kelantan, Kampung Panti and Kampung Tembioh.

Baderi also said the state government had allocated RM7.7 million for repairing roads and bridges damaged in the second wave of floods.

The damage to infrastructures during the first flood was estimated at RM90.7 million.

Meanwhile, Local Government and Health Committee Chairman Datuk Halimah Sadique said the victims who lost their homes would be temporarily placed at houses in housing estates around Kota tinggi.

She said 44 families needed new houses because their homes were seriously damaged in the floods.
