Priority for contractors who have good record
04/06/2005 The Star

PENANG: Contractors who can complete government projects on time, or ahead of schedule, will be given priority in future projects.

Deputy secretary-general in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Houd Sirat said those with good record would have an advantage over others when vying for jobs.

“In my seven years overseeing the construction of buildings under the Prime Minister’s Department, not many contractors delivered their projects on time or ahead of schedule.

“I hope more contractors can do so to win the people’s confidence,” he said after receiving the keys to the new RM104mil Bangunan Gunasama Persekutuan in Anson Road from its developer, the Public Works Department, here yesterday.

Houd commended the PWD and building contractor Syarikat Nyaman-Shazalis JV Sdn Bhd for completing the 13-storey building 40 days ahead of schedule.

“If more contractors had the same enthusiasm, the problem of delayed and abandoned projects, recently highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, would not arise.”

Houd said he was impressed with the building’s architecture and interior designs, noting that the PWD had come a long way since its standard “matchbox” structures.

The building would be occupied by 13 government departments with more than 450 staff soon.
