Half of tilted block’s flat owners sell units to PDC
The Star Penang 5/5/2005

About half of the 60 flat owners of the tilted walk-up block in Bayan Baru have agreed to sell their units to the Penang Development Cor-poration (PDC) for between RM30,000 and RM59,000.

The owners turned up at the PDC office in Bayan Baru yes-terday to sign their agreements to sell their flats. Those who missed signing yesterday can still do so.

They will also be gi- ven between RM1,200 and RM2,400 to pay for rental for six months.

Yesterday, PDC paid them the rental and 10% of the offer price for their flats. Another 40% would be paid by the end of the month with the remainder to be settled early next month.

Pantai Jerejak assemblyman Wong Mun Hoe said 46 of the 60 owners had also taken up PDC's offer of priority to buy low-cost units built by deve-lopers in Sungai Dua, Sungai Nibong and Sungai Pinang.

“Another 13 wanted cash while one is still undecided. From those who have yet to sign their agreements, two are still disputing the price of the units and it is up to them to take the matter to court,” he said, adding that 12 residents were still living in their flats.

He said the building was expected to be demolished next month or July.

On Feb 2, the residents were advised to move out after their Block H was found to have tilted by more than a degree and moved 25.4cm from its axis.

It was a bittersweet moment for manufacturing supervisor A. Devagi, 28, when she came with her mother S. Mary, 52, to collect her initial payment totalling RM8,000.

“I feel sad to move out from the flats we had called our home for 10 years but we know that it's better to relocate than to stay in an unsafe building,” said Devagi.

Another resident Rosland Mohamed, 42, said he also feared for his family's safety, especially after the earthquakes in Indonesia.
