KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- The 6.3 magnitude earthquake which jolted the Indonesian island of North Sumatera at 9.45am Thursday caused tremors in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

A Meteorological Services Department spokesman said the tremors took place at latitude 2.0 north and longitude 96.9 east, about 620 km off here.

The spokesman said, among the places that experienced tremors were Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Last Saturday, tremors were felt following a powerful earthquake measuring 6.7 of the Richter scale, which rocked parts of West Sumatera.

A spokesman of the Jalan Hang Tuah fire station, said it received two calls at about 10am.

"The callers from Bandar Tasik Permaisuri and Jalan Raja Chulan informed us that tremors were felt at their respective places," he said.

The Petaling Jaya fire station also received calls from the public who informed them of tremors in Kelana Jaya.
