Tribunal has resolved most claims
      by buyers, says Ong
      The Star 26/4/2005

THE House Buyers Claims Tribunal resolved 80% of the 11,857 cases filed
      until March 31.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said 1,006
cases were settled out of court.

He said the total compensation given out could not be determined as not
all claims were in monetary form; some developers were ordered to fix or
      replace house defects.

He said the tribunal, set up on Dec 1, 2002, succeeded in becoming an
alternative body for making claims in a “cheap, easy and fast manner while
safeguarding the rights of house buyers, should discrepancies occur in the
      sale and purchase agreement.”

Ong said this in a written reply to Loh Seng Kok (BN – Kelana Jaya), who
asked about the effectiveness of the tribunal.

Almost 100% of the cases were solved in 2003 and 90.1% in 2004.

For this year, Selangor registered the highest number of cases, 1,392,
with 784 yet to be resolved; followed by Perak (167 cases, 119 not solved)
and the Federal Territory (120 cases, 68 not solved). |
