Residents worry about cracks in
      buildings
The Sun 22/4/2005 by Yap Yew YinKuala Lumpur: The
residents of Iris Apartments in Taman Desa, Seputeh are worried about the
cracks in their buildings, especially after the recent earthquakes in the
      region.
The cracks are believed to be the result of piling work
carried out in the area by Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART)
      since November 2002.
The residents are worried the cracks might make the
      buildings unstable.
Apartment residents' representative Dr Ng Si Sion said
complaints had been made to SMART, the developer of the apartments, and
      police.
"The cracks started appearing last year and new cracks
have appeared since then," he said, adding that they are found "in the
      same place on every floor".
There are cracks on the staircase, walls, windows,
doors, and several parts of the pavement and tarmac in the parking lot.
The residents are also worried that stagnant water from
blocked drainage at the back of the apartments may cause the spread of
      dengue fever.
Ng said a monitoring team from SMART had made frequent
inspections of the apartments, but the residents had yet to be informed of
      the findings.
"A monthly or weekly inspection may seem normal but the
inspections are carried out almost everyday making the situation seem more
      worrying," he said.
"We hope someone can let us know that we are safe from
      danger."
Ng said SMART project staff have told residents that the
company would repair the cracks only after a thorough inspection to
determine if they were caused by work carried out under the project. |
