About 50 representatives from various residents associations in Bukit
Rahman Putra (BRP) in Sungai Buloh staged a peaceful demonstration to
      protest against air pollution.

They believe the pollution was caused by emissions from a factory
producing road tar products in Taman Perindustrian SB Jaya, about 3km from
      their housing estate.

Putra Anggun or BRP 5 resident Ramesh Chandran said the problem started
two years ago when his family first moved to the area.

He said the strong tar smell was usually evident early in the morning,
adding that he found this disturbing as this was the time children get
ready for school and senior citizens went for their morning walk.

“The factory should have a proper filtering system that can prevent air
      pollution,” said Chandran.
Putra Anggun residents association chairman, Lee Hon Tong said the problem
      was periodical.

“When we complain about it, it stops but later it starts again. There has
never been a complete stop to this problem.
“We just want to live in a healthy environment,” said Lee at the protest
headed by Gerakan BRP branch chairman Lee Hui Seng.

Lee said the the factory’s emission was harmful to people’s health in the
      long run.
He said they had brought up the matter to the Selayang Municipal Council
(MPS), Selangor Department of Environment and Paya Jaras assemblyman
Bushro Mat Johor and hoped the authorities would take action against the
      factory.

He also said residents from BRP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 would be setting up
an environmental sub-committee soon to monitor the pollution.

“We want better air quality for a better quality of life.
“Something must be done to stop the factory’s irresponsible ways,” said
Lee, adding that the most affected areas were BRP 4 and 5.

When contacted, Bushro said complaints had been made to the Selangor DOE
and the matter was being investigated. |
