GEORGE TOWN, Apr 10: The Jalan Kedah flats here have become the first
low-cost residences in the State to be equipped with closed-circuit
      television (CCTV) surveillance.
The RM5,000 system, installed at the car park and two
      lifts, will benefit 3,500 residents.
Residents' association chairman Tay Chye Hock said the decision to install
the system was made as the number of snatch and car thefts in the area had
      increased.

"We also hope vandalism and misuse of the lifts will be reduced with the
      installation of CCTVs," he said.
He said 10 more CCTVs would be installed soon. The flats will also get two
      new lifts.

"This should be ready by July or August This will cost us another
      RM20,000," he said.

He added that the association also planned to have 100 lockable motorcycle
bays. These improvements were sponsored by Padang Kota Assemblyman Teng Chang
Yeow, who launched the system today.

He hoped the residents would maintain and utilise the new facilities. He
recommended other residential areas install CCTV systems of their own.

Also present at the launch were Chief Inspector Rohizad Halim from the
Jalan Penang police headquarters, Ascall Sdn Bhd technical manager Cheah
Hock Khoon and residents' association vice-chairman Yassin Kechik Meera. |
