The Malacca City Council will clean up abandoned project sites and bill the
owners in a bid to check the breeding of mosquitoes.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Zaini Md Nor said an operation had been started to
check several abandoned buildings in the city, which might become mosquito
    breeding grounds.
Owners of the identified abandoned projects would be given two weeks to
    clean up, he said.
“They will be fined RM500 if they fail to do so. Besides this, we can
help them clean the places and bill them for the job,” he said after
visiting an uncompleted building, which had been abandoned since 1997.
Pools of stagnant water were found at the site of the 20-storey
commercial project involving the construction of a shopping complex and
    condominiums.

“Notice will be sent to the project owner soon and we hope they will
    clean it quickly,” said Zaini.
An average of 30 compounds had been issued to residents and owners of
commercial premises who failed to dispose rubbish properly, he said.
The offences include dumping rubbish on roadsides and not putting rubbish
    into rubbish bins.
“Everyone has the responsibility to keep their places clean for their
    comfort and that of others.
“Poor disposal of rubbish will create pools of stagnant water and
breeding of mosquitoes,” he added.    |
