42 errant developers to be taken to court

The Star 7/9/2004

FORTY-two developers who did not comply with the orders issued by the Tribunal for Home Buyers Claims would be charged soon, according to Sin Chew Daily.

The daily quoted Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting as saying that the ministry had sent out summonses and had prepared the charge documents.

He said if the developers did not reply or pay the compensation to house buyers within the time specified, the ministry would charge them in court once it obtained the approval from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“If the developer is smart, then he will know how it works.

“He might just need to pay a RM3,000 compensation but he would end up paying more if he is charged in court,” he said.

He was commenting on a report that 42 flat owners in Jinjang Utara were still waiting for the compensation from the developers.

Ong said most of the developers involved in the 5,000 housing compensation cases handled by the tribunal had paid out the money.
