VIPs evading payment of land premiums, says Selangor MB
The Star 23/04/2004 BY EDWARD RAJENDRA

SHAH ALAM: Prominent corporate figures and developers who acquired hundreds of hectares of land from the Selangor government more than 15 years ago are among hundreds who have dodged the annual land premium payments amounting to millions of ringgit.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said some of them not only ignored reminders but also had the audacity to drop names to frighten civil servants from acting against them.

“There are public-listed companies that owe us from RM385,000 to RM15mil. I will not give in to their subtle threats,” he said after launching the Quit Rent Collection Campaign at the Batu Tiga toll plaza here yesterday morning.

Dr Khir said it was an utter shame for chief executive officers and chairmen of companies to ignore payment of land premiums.

“Former leaders have given them vast stretches of land. It is only right that they pay the land premium. Now most of the land is idle and there is no revenue for the state government.

“If they are unable to settle the arrears or develop the area, it is time the land is taken back. Last year, we seized a 16ha parcel of land in Petaling as the company had not paid the land premium for 10 years,” he added.

Dr Khir said owners owe RM900mil in Klang, Gombak, Hulu Selangor, Hulu Langat, Sepang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.

Dr Khir said the state was prepared to give a 50% discount on quit rent fines for residential units and 25% for commercial lots.
