Emulate developer's goodwill move
The Star 4/04/2004

On March 28, a rainstorm wrecked havoc in Puchong and its surrounding area. It blew off the roof tiles of many houses in Bandar Puteri, and damaged and uprooted many road signs, trees and hoardings.

The residents faced a sleepless night not knowing whether another storm would hit. The next day, many of them went to the office of the developer, M/S Flora Development Sdn Bhd, to voice their grievances. Surprisingly, the staff managed the situation tactfully and efficiently.

The developer promised to repair the damage free of charge though contractually the defect liability period of 18 months on vacant possession had already expired. There was also no evidence of shoddy workmanship and the developer did not blame it on an "act of God".

I would like to say that this should be the attitude private developers should adopt. The goodwill generated will be a better marketing tool than just advertising or having weekend launches. May I also urge the developer to set up a full-time police beat base to deter theft or break-ins, which is quite prevalent in this new growth area.
