Management of fire-prone flat gets warning
Malay Mail 27/12/2004

AMPANG: The Fire and Rescue Department will issue a warning notice to the management of Taman Cahaya Apartment in Taman Cahaya for their failure to properly maintain their fire-fighting facilities.

Its Ampang station chief Ishak Abdul Hamid said this was following the discovery that the apartment's wet riser system malfunctioned and there is no water hose on every floor.

The lack in fire-fighting facilities beca- me known following a blaze at the apartment yesterday, which was successfully controlled by a team of 26 firefighters from three stations - Ampang, Pandan Indah and Jalan Hang Tuah.

The team arrived at 12.33pm following a distress call, and took 20 minutes to put the fire under control at a unit on 15th floor and two units on 16th.

"We had difficulties in pumping water up to the 16th floor, and discovered that the apartment's two water hydrants we- re not in working condition," said Ishak.

He said they also found that the apartment's wet riser system was not functioning well.

"This resulted in low water pressure. We also discovered that there was no water hose on all floors," he said.

Ishak said they had to use water from the two fire engines to fight the fire.

"We will issue a notice to the management to rectify the problems soon or face the consequences," he said.
