SS4 residents in arms over condo project

28/10/2002 The Star By CHIN MUI YOON

RESIDENTS of SS4 Petaling Jaya are protesting against a proposed condominium project that is a stone’s throw away from their homes.

Some of the residents have received letters from the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council late last month informing them of the project and requesting their opinions within 21 days.

The project, consisting of 468 units, will be situated near the Kelana Jaya LRT station. It is expected to be a massive development by Golden City Development Sdn Bhd, with twin U-shaped condominium blocks consisting of a swimming pool, tennis courts and a four-storey shoplot.

“The project has not been launched but we managed to get some of the development plans,” said Dr Paramjeet Singh Gill, who is chairman of a pro tem committee formed to handle the issue.

“There is no way the existing infrastructure can cope with the sudden increase in population density with the high-rise condominiums. Nearly 250 households will be affected.

Paramjeet Singh said the only access was Jalan SS4C where his house was located.

He said the narrow road could not accommodate the expected increase of the 1, 000 vehicles when the condominium blocks were occupied.

He added that all the residents had signed a formal protest against the project in a letter addressed to MPPJ president Datuk Emran Kadir.

“If the project is approved we want the developer and MPPJ to agree on opening a direct access from the project site to the highway. Then hopefully it will channel the huge traffic away from Jalan SS4C,” said Paramjeet Singh.

Another concern is the three to five years of construction work at the site.

“Since only 6m separates our houses from the site, it will affect our water pressure, drainage, power supply and the foundation of our houses,” he said.

“The piling work will affect our houses. We’re also worried about the sound and noise pollution.”

“We will all lose our privacy as the condominium looms above us all where its occupants can look into our living rooms and bedrooms,” Paramjeet Singh said.

He added that they had already contacted their assemblyman C.K. Lim, who had advised them to jointly file a protest letter to the authorities.

“SS4 is an old and quiet residential area. We bought houses here because it is an ideal neighbourhood to live and raise our children. Now all that is threatened by the project,” said Paramjeet Singh.
