MPs voice their grouses over housing industry
The Star 16/10/2001

BACKBENCHERS and opposition MPs took the opportunity to voice their numerous grouses over the local housing industry in their debate on the long-awaited Housing Developers (Licensing and Control) (Amendment) Bill.

So many MPs showed their interest to debate the Bill that Speaker Tun Zahir Ismail had to limit each to speak to 20 minutes.

Datuk Husni Hanadzlah (BN – Tambun) urged the Government to limit the number of houses a developer could build on a plot of land or this might later give rise to social problems and crimes.

“Previously, an acre of land would only accommodate up to 10 houses but the number had increased to 18 or even 20 units over the recent years. Developers don’t even bother to design houses with open space anymore.

“The density is so high, especially among low-cost units that living conditions in these places are not really conducive.

He also called on the Government to consider allowing foreign companies to buy houses totalling some 46,000 units which were still yet unsold nationwide.

Kerk Kim Hock (DAP – Kota Melaka) urged the Government to set up a housing developers’ guarantee scheme, which could be used to bail out developers who run into financial problems.

“Such a scheme will help protect the buyers.’’

Datuk Ho Cheong Sing (BN – Ipoh Barat) contended that delay in the local authorities’ processing of various applications by developers had posed a financial burden to buyers.

“Sometimes, developers are forced to plan and build their projects according to specifications laid down by local authorities, which may be unnecessary, and the costs are later passed down to buyers,” he said
