One-stop agency soon for housing industry

06/11/2000 The Star

SUBANG JAYA: Developers and those involved in the housing industry would soon have an easier time getting approval for their certificates of fitness for occupancy (CFO) applications.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said his ministry was planning to set up a one-stop agency which would integrate the seven technical departments involved in giving out CFOs.

The ministry would work with the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) to set up the new system.

"Submissions would be done once and the departments would be able to process them simultaneously,'' he said.

The departments are the Waterworks Department, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Telekom Malaysia, Public Works Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Drainage and Irrigation Department and Town Planning Department.

"This is not a simple thing as it involves different departments,'' he told reporters after opening the MPSJ 3 on 3 Basketball Championship here yesterday.

Ong also urged staff of local authorities to upgrade their information technology skills to increase efficiency.

"I think most of the local authorities are not IT oriented yet. A few are working hard towards that end. Under the Eighth Malaysia Plan, the ministry is trying to ensure that they become part of the electronic government,'' he added.
