New scheme for expatriates?
14/06/2006 The Star
I UNDERSTAND that the Malaysia My Second Home programme has been modified
from April 6 to attract more people from different nations to apply to live
in our country.
Expatriates working in Malaysia have significantly contributed to our
economy and have developed a liking for this great nation.
Considering their contributions and their commitment to the country, the
Government may consider to offer a Malaysia My First Home scheme exclusively
for expatriates who have stayed and worked in Malaysia for a minimum period
of two years, are above 50 years old and are regular tax payers.
Expatriates opting for the scheme can be used as ambassadors to promote
Malaysia My Second Home programme to their fellow citizens and others to
make the programme a success.
In addition, expatriates who choose to make Malaysia “my first home” are
likely to transfer all their moveable assets to Malaysia as there will be no
uncertainty left in their minds, pertaining to their future.
Furthermore, there is no transition period for them to settle as they have
already adapted to the local culture and systems.
And as they possess extensive experience, skills, knowledge, determination
and desire to work towards the prosperity of the nation they will become an
asset to our society.
The incentives given in the Malaysia My Second Home programme are certainly
encouraging for people who wish to make Malaysia their second home.
To make the programme even more attractive, I have a few suggestions:
1) Handicapped and dependent unmarried children over 18 years be allowed to
accompany their parents as these children need parental help;
2) Visa holders be allowed to work part-time or start their own business;
3) Option for second car, duty free for couples, and they be allowed to
replace the cars after five years, considering expensive maintenance of the
vehicle; and
4) The balance deposit of RM60,000 in fixed deposit be returnable after five
years for re-investment in Malaysia.
