Foreign couple ‘fall in love’
with island
26/09/2006 The Star
A Briton and his Japanese wife who have been living in Penang the past two
months have decided to retire on the island.
Blain Lucas, 53 and Misako Lucas, 38, came to The Star Property & Home Fair
2005 early Friday to look for a condominium or landed property on the
island.
“We're currently leasing a place in Tanjung Tokong and would like to have
our own home here under the Malaysia My Second Home programme.
“The cost of living here is cheaper compared to Japan or Europe. Penang is
also safe and the people are friendly,” said Blain, who had previously been
living in Japan.
The line-up of good international schools also helped the couple make up
their minds as they have three young children to think of.

Sarawakian Lum Yen Han, 24, and his wife Jenny Jee, also 24, from Ipoh are
another non-Penangite couple who have decided to settle down in Penang.
The young couple preferred the spaciousness of a landed property and were
eyeing a house on the mainland.
“We're looking for a double-storey corner terrace house within the RM250,000
to RM300,000 range.”
Those seeking sound advice on buying a house turned to the Housing and Local
Government Ministry booth.
About 200 booklets to spread public awareness on this subject were
distributed throughout the three-day fair.
Ministry enforcement officer Sarom Ghazali said many people buy property
without referring to a proper checklist.
Under the checklist, they should see if they could secure the necessary
housing loan and also ask if the property is leasehold or freehold, he said
during an interview.
He also said disgruntled house buyers often did not know where to complain
and would instead refer their cases to the state government.
He said they should refer their complaints to the Ministry at
