Speech by YB Datuk Hj, Zainuddin Bin Hj. Bachik during the Affordable Housing Forum
at Business & Advanced Technology Center (BATC), UTM, Jalan Semarak, KL on 12th November, 2002
As the price of land, which is fast becoming a scarcer commodity is subject to rife speculation, alternative
measures to check the spiraling prices of houses must be intensely pursued such as by harnessing modern technologies and creative
designs of houses, with no less aesthetic beauty, in order to decrease the costs of construction and to provide affordable houses
to the greater masses of people especially those earning low income in the country.
The problem of this group of people who are in the lower rung of society and forming the low level workforce should not be allowed
to perpetuate as they would continue to live in dilapidated houses and unhygienic environmental conditions unless a housing policy
is formalised to enable them to own houses that are heavily aided by subsidies on land by the government and soft terms loan
provided by the Banks and Financial Institutions.
